13th October 2009
Dear Friends,

Over the next few weeks the Fundamental Rights Agency of the European Union will be re-opening membership of the Fundamental Rights Platform of the Agency. I would like to encourage you to consider engaging with the Platform as a way to promote your consideration, in the EU context, of the Fundamental Rights and anti-discrimination issues you are concerned with.

Information will be available at:
http://fra.europa.eu/fraWebsite/civil_society/fr_platform/fr_platform_en.htm

The functions of the Platform which are listed in the Regulation of the Agency are;

- To make suggestions on the Annual Work Programme
- To give feedback and suggest follow-up on the Annual Report
- To communicate outcomes and recommendations of conferences, seminars and meetings relevant to the work of the Agency.

In addition, the Agency will interact with the participants of the Fundamental Rights Platform in accordance with specific needs related to areas identified as a priority for the Agency's work.

These functions mean that, while the Platform is not a decision making body of the Agency, it has the important function of informing FRA’s work and planning.

The following criteria will apply cumulatively in determining participation in the Fundamental Rights Platform:

Organisations committed to work and with a proven record of work for the advancement of fundamental rights;

Organisations active in the areas of the Agency's Multiannual Framework;

Organizations with a specific expertise, proven experience and engagement in matters within the remit of FRA;

Organisations which are representative in the field of their competence on national, regional, European or international level;

Local/grass roots organizations may participate on the basis of specific demand by the Agency (e.g. organizations working closely and directly with victims of fundamental rights violations) in order to directly inform the work of FRA from this crucial perspective;
Organisations with an ability and capacity to act as a link between their own constituencies, national and European networks and the Platform;
Organisations which are able to make known the work of FRA in their country;

In effect, engagement with the Platform is open, attending meetings and financial support is of course limited, but even without attending everyone can play a role.

From those who attended the last meeting of the platform in Vienna last May, an advisory panel for the Fundamental Rights Platform was elected for a period of one year. The next Platform meeting will be May 2010 in Vienna.

Please get in touch with me or directly with
Massimo.Toschi@fra.europa.eu if you require further information.Please note also the attached information regarding a date for your diary: A meeting for NGO’s and other civil society actors interested in the Platform will take place at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth on December 3rd before the Fundamental Rights Agency Roundtable Discussion.

Any further information you require can be accessed by following one of the links below, a number of studies have been completed over the past year which may be of interest to you.

Best wishes,

Anastasia Crickley

Moustache Riot
Moustache Riot are a three piece international rock band based in Dublin. Their sound is rock! With Conrad coming from Brazil with a background of flash heavy metal, Tak from Japan listening to all kinds of classic hard rock and Stephen from California being into alternative and classic rock. They have an “ in your face “ sound and an energenic vibe on stage. Starting out as a Jimi Hendrix Experience Covers band and slowly writing their own material, you could describe their sound as a modern Hendrix California rock band. But with Conrad’s ripping licks and effects, Tak’s melodic bass and Stephen’s intense drum playing, they have a new sound of their own. Are you ready for them?
The Super Fantastic Adventures of Captain Magic in his Amazing Wonderland
The Super Fantastic Adventures of Captain Magic in his Amazing Wonderland is a musical project formed by musicians from Spain, Brazil and Ireland. They have managed to create a unique sound of folk, funk, blues and disco. Electric and acoustic guitars, drums, bass, flute, violin, saxophone and percussion create a rich sound that will make you move whether you want to or not. With only a couple of months under their belts they’ve played The Academy , The Button factory , Sin é , The Globe , Shebeen Chic, The Scene, The Twisted Pepper and The Festival of World Cultures.
Mute Fish
Take two Lithuanians, an Irish, a Polish and a Ukrainian...add surf music, folk music and traditional music from each of their respective countries and you get Mute Fish.This five piece manage to fuse elements of what seems an impossible mix ,and make it sound the way it should. One minute you’re in a scene of Pulp Fiction, the next you’re at an Eastern European Ceili! Expect some twisted ankles at The Twisted Pepper.
Your Dj's for the evening shall be...
Bootnik
Bootnik has been Sin E’s resident Wednesday night DJ since 2008. “Little Saturday” as the night is known unifies the aural currencies of Soul, Afrobeat, Funk, Bossa and Breaks to electrify your ass off the chair and onto the dancefloor. After a successful campaign launch in July and an invite to Electric Picnic 09,the LMHR ''Sight and Awarenes'' Campaign has gained a lot of ground and will soon be launching in Cork and Galway. Our aim is to promote education and understanding of other cultures through musical events. The economic downturn has created the perfect breeding ground for anger towards immigrants, asylum seekers and foreigners in general. We want to take that anger and the ignorance and turn it into something good. For more info on Love Music Hate Racism , its origins and its campaigns, please visit

This is not a good time for equality and human rights in Ireland. ERA believes that the Government has used the cover of financial cutbacks to mount a targeted attack on Irish equality, rights and social justice bodies for severe cuts. This undermines the ability of those bodies to assist people experiencing inequality and discrimination to vindicate their rights. The aims of our workshop: To inform you about the ERA campaign and our work to hold Government to account for its cuts to the equality and human rights bodies, To gather information about the concerns of local groups on how cuts are affecting your work to combat discrimination and promote equality and how we can add your concerns to the ERA campaign, To outline the practical support that properly functioning watchdog bodies can provide to help people vindicate their rights, To look at practical campaigning to help ensure that the equality and human rights infrastructure is strengthened and improved for people experiencing inequality and discrimination. October 2009 - A Month of Action For a Just Debt Policy for Ireland
With the World Bank and IMF holding their annual meetings in Turkey this week, now is the time to bring the attention of our political representatives to the urgent need for a new, just debt policy for Ireland.
Last year, DDCI campaigners persuaded the Minister for Overseas Development Peter Power TD to agree to publish a new debt policy. And now the Department of Finance are drafting it. This month is a critical month to ensure that the Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan and Minister Peter Power are aware of our deep concern that the people of the Global South must not pay for unjust and illegitimate debts.
This campaign is all the more urgent right now as impoverished countries face into yet another devastating debt crisis as a result of the global financial crisis. This is because the solutions being offered to countries of the Global South by the World Bank and IMF are to give more loans with damaging policy conditions attached, rather than to do what is needed - cancel unjust debts and provide more grants to help people to cope.
To add insult to injury, the World Bank is offering loans with policy conditions attached to impoverished countries to cope with climate change - despite their not being responsible for the climate crisis in the first place. Offering more credit to impoverished countries is not the solution to the debt or climate crises!
DDCI is asking you to support the Campaign for a Just Debt Policy for Ireland by:
1. Printing out the attached petition and asking your friends / family / comrades / community to sign it (Or we can post you printed copies on request).
2. Once you have some signatories on your petition, send copies of it with a personal note to all of your local TDs and ask them to raise a question about the need for a new, just debt policy in the Dáil. And ask them to request the Minister for Finance and Minister Peter Power to support a new debt policy that reflects the concerns raised in your petition.
A just Irish debt policy is very important as it will guide how the Irish government represents us as a member of the World Bank and IMF.
You can find the postal and phone contacts for your TDs at:
http://oireachtas.ie/members-hist/default.asp?housetype=0&HouseNum=30&disp=const
- For more background information on the petition you can read the attached 'DDCI Campaigners Update'.
