Migrant Rights Centre Ireland PRESS NOTICE

9 March 2010 Restaurant Workers to Stage Protest at Supermac’s, Responding to Industry’s Attack on Wages. Visuals to include picket signs and banners. Monday, 15 MarchStart: 1:00pm. End: 2:00pm.Supermac’s, O’Connell St., Dublin The Restaurant Workers Action Group, established by the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland, will be staging a protest on Monday, 15th March at 1:00pm, at Supermac’s on O’Connell St. in Dublin. Supermac’s is part of the Quick Service Food Alliance, an industry group mounting a legal challenge to the JLC (Joint Labour Committee) system which sets wages for the restaurant industry. Although Supermac’s saw its pre-tax profits quadruple last year, it is joining other restaurants in challenging wage protections for its workers. Many of these workers are already on low wages, and are struggling to survive in the current recession. The Migrant Rights Centre Ireland is a national organisation working to promote justice, empowerment and equality for migrant workers and their families. Its Restaurant Workers Action Group works to improve conditions for restaurant workers across the country. Contact: Delphine O’Keeffe (Communications Officer) – 087 241 0039

Mentoring programme

Just a quick note to say that, after the successful conclusion of a mentoring programme that matched local people - both Irish and long established non-Irish residents - with newly arrived migrants through one-to-one mentoring relationships in Dublin, the ICI received a grant extension from the European Fund for the Integration of Third Country Nationals (through the Office of the Minister for Integration and administered by Pobal) to roll out the programme nationally. Following from a training session for trainers hosted by the ICI in February 2010, our partners are currently recruiting mentees and mentors in Blanchardstown/Dublin (Crosscare); Tallaght/Dublin (Dodder Valley Partnership); Galway City (Galway Partnership); Limerick City and county (Doras Luimní); and Mallow and Fermoy/Co. Cork (Avondhu Blackwater Partnership Ltd). Details can be found in the attached advertisements. I would appreciate if you could pass the information on to your contacts whom you feel might be interested in getting involved as mentees and mentors.
