World Cup Fever in FingalPackie Bonner & Wim Koevermans Launch The World “Community” Cup 2010Have you ever wanted to lift the world cup?An exciting new competition was launched this week by FAI Technical Director Packie Bonner and High Performance director Wim Koevermans. Supported by Fingal County Council and organised by the FAI/Final Football Development Officers, the competition will result in one winning team from Skerries and Swords lifting a replica World Cup.Speaking about this innovative new competition, Paul Keogh FAI/Fingal County Council Development Officer said “With the World Cup only a couple of weeks away we have come up with a format which will mean we will run our competition alongside that of the International main event. Our tournament headquarters is based at the Ridgeway Barber Shop at Church Street, Skerries and players need to register their interest with HQ.”He continued “The competition is aimed at adults and youths over 16 years of age. This program is supported by the FAI’s Intercultural department and the hope is that it attracts interest from those of all different nationalities”The closing date for applications is Friday 11th June 2010, and games will take place on each Monday from 8pm – 10pm throughout the World Cup schedule at Skerries Community Centre. Teams will play one game per evening, and the Final will take place on the morning of the World Cup Final on the 11th July. Players will be allocated a country in advance and teams will be formed on the basis of player’s ability and experience.Robbie Corr of Sporting Fingal Special Olympics’ team is also helping to organise the event and is very supportive of the event “The World cup brings the nations of the world together to celebrate the game of football and its ability in life to unite, the World Community Cup embraces this idea and asks all in the community to come together and celebrate the greatest sporting event.
