Issues in working with the impact of sexual violence

Issues in working with the impact of sexual violence and other trauma a 4 day training programme for staff working in key support roles with refugees and asylum seekers Wednesday 5th, Thursday 6th, Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th May 2010 9.30 am to 4.30 pm Venue: Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, 70 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin 2 With the support of funding from the European Refugee Fund, Dublin Rape Crisis Centre offers a 4 day training programme for staff working in one to one support roles with clients who are asylum seekers and refugees. This training is offered to those working as support workers, counsellors, key workers or in other roles where they are offering one to one ongoing support to refugee and asylum seeking clients and is intended to enhance their capacity to support clients who have experienced sexual violence and other trauma. The course programme:Sexual violence as a global issue The impact of societal and cultural attitudes and myths on people who have experienced sexual violence An understanding of the impact of sexual violence and other trauma and how this may affect the person on a daily basis Additional issues and traumas which may be relevant to refugees and asylum seekers. Facilitating appropriate disclosure of traumatic experiences and preventing re-traumatisation Strategies for dealing with symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Issues when working through an interpreter Supporting the client to recount traumatic experiences as part of a legal process An overview of the stages of the counselling process in working with sexual violence and other trauma Identifying and developing the resources of the client Vicarious traumatisation and the impact of working with those who have experienced sexual violence and other trauma Strategies for self care for staff members The training approach is participative and experiential and will include lecture, group discussion, video footage, role play and case study. Emphasis is placed on the enhancement of existing skills, as well as developing new areas of competence. The maximum number of participants is 16, to facilitate group participation, so early booking is advised. There is a €80 fee for attendance at this four day training course, which is a subsidised rate. If you wish to attend, please complete and return the application form. A Certificate of Attendance will be provided to participants who complete the four day programme.
