Violence Against Women-A Global Crisis: Accountability—Activism—Action Thomond Park, Limerick, Thursday, 26th November 2009, 9.15 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. A conference organised by Banúlacht-Women in Ireland for Global Solidarity, the Clare Women’s Network and the Limerick Women’s Network for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. Violence against women has been termed a “global pandemic”. The conference will explore diverse aspects of this pandemic and highlight the work of organisations in Ireland and the South that are working for the eradication of violence against women. Keynote speakers: Margaret Martin (Director, Women’s Aid), Leila Sheikh (Journalist/activist): Nata Duvvury (Global Women's Studies Programme, NUI Galway). Morning session chaired by Nessa Ni Chasaide, vice-chair of Banúlacht; afternoon session chaired by Ailbhe Smyth, Feminist Open Forum. Workshops cover diverse issues, such as Local and Global Costs of Violence against Women; What Is Violence against Women?; One Size Doesn’t Fit All: Making Services More Inclusive; Challenging Violence against Women through Feminist Activism; The 16 Days Campaign: Community-based Responses; Relaxation Skills; Where the Legal System Fails Women; Violence against Women and HIV: A Global Pandemic; Women and Armed Conflict and feature facilitators and resource people from Amnesty International, National Traveller Women’s Forum, Akidwa, West Clare Women’s Forum, Women’s Aid, Trócaire, Clare Haven House, NUI Galway, Hill St FRC, Feminist Open Forum, Joint Consortium on Gender Based Violence.
